April, 2016
Hello to our lovely Mill Road and Grace Community members, supporters, and to SPRING!
Long time no see.
There has been much behind the scenes discussion and planning as Mill Road Community Space has wrapped up our first successful year and swings, once again, into high gear. Our books are balanced, we have had the opportunity to donate over $4000 to various groups in need and we have found some wonderful friendships.
Through the combined work of all of our partners we have some events, volunteer opportunities and some openings for space rental which we are delighted to share with you. Our thanks especially to the Grace Collective and to the trustees and congregation of Chelsea Grace United for their continued interest in the Mill Road project. Our aim is to follow in their footsteps of community service, social responsibility and breathing life into the building we all love.
We are very excited and grateful to be hosting the iconic Folk musicians “FINEST KIND” the weekend of April 30 and May 1. There will be two concerts as part of their farewell tour as they wrap up 25 years of wonderful performances. Both are sold out, but Mill Road will be providing refreshments, gather proceeds for a charitable share partner and generally hover. We would be happy to accept donations of yummy things to share.
Ian Tambyn and Lynn Miles, two of our regions finest singer/ songwriters will be hosting a weekend song writing workshop May 13-15. The evening of Friday, May 13 there will be an evening concert. $20 Tickets will be available soon at Les Fougeres and at the door. Again, the MRCS angels will be helping out with refreshments and a share partner.
James Stephens, Mill Road resident artistic advisor, Fiddlehead instructor, musician and angel may be performing in concert with The Celtic Choir, Saturday, May 28. Tickets will be available to the public once things are confirmed. There will be a recording session on Sunday because the acoustics in the Sanctuary are remarkable. We are proud.
With deep appreciation and love for the guiding spirit of so much of the good work which happens in our community, the indispensable Chelsea Nearly New, and certainly as the inspiration for MRCS volunteers on Saturday afternoon, June 18 at 2Pm, MRCS and The Nearly New will host an afternoon tea and dedication of the lower lever“Shirley Dufour Hall”. All are welcome to join us, the Dufour family and Shirley’s Nearly New family. We will be gratefully accepting donations of food (you know those little “church lady sandwiches” and volunteer servers. We will have news then about an exciting Fall Fundraising VINTAGE SALE!! Contactmillrdcommunityspace@gmail.com.
Chelsea Theatre School will again be hosting two week sessions of Summer Theatre Camp for kids. Please contact makework@hurman.ca
On that note, we are also accepting bookings for Summer camps and events and actively looking for more single event and recurring tenants for all three rooms for Fall 2016 17. If you know of anybody who might be looking for space, we especially love artists, activists and community minded folks, please refer them to us!
